What is Biomimicry?

Biomimicry (or biomimetics) is a scientific discipline that studies and imitate the principles in nature to find better solutions for various problems that we humans face.

Why Biomimicry?

Throughout the long history of evolution, an experimentation called "natural selection" has been conducted on the biological design in nature. Studying the results of this experimentation provides us better ideas for solutions that are often the most efficient, optimal and environment-friendly. Biomimicry Academy, where the participants can view the living organisms from various scientific disciplines, provides high school students with a good opportunity to experience the multidisciplinary nature of science.

Biomimicry Academy Overview

Who can apply
1st and 2nd year high school students can apply but the number of recommended participants is limited to 2 students per school.
What is it about
The program provides an overview of fields and subjects in biomimetics through a series of invited lectures with accompanying activities.
When
The academy is usually scheduled on the first or the second week of August and it is a 5-day-long program.

Objective and Purpose of the Biomimetics Academy

Cultivating a broad understanding of biomimetics
  • Introducing the rising field of ‘biomimetics’ to high school students with a keen interest in science, to cultivate a broad understanding of biomimetics.
  • What is biomimetics? : Biology-based engineering and technology, which involves learning about the evolution, natural selection, and adaptation of living organisms and applying ideas inspired by living organisms to engineering and technology.
Introduction to undergraduate studies at DGIST and fostering science and technology professionals
  • The biomimetics education program is held during school holidays in order to achieve maximum educational effect, while introducing the undergraduate program at DGIST.
  • The long term goal is not just to promote public understanding of science, but also to foster world-class science and technology professionals.
