Undergraduate Debate Competition Program

The Undergraduate Debate Competition is a campus debate competition held to enhance the logical thinking and presentation skills of our students, while creating a culture of consideration in line with the value of “Care” among the DGIST 4Cs.

Debate rules

1. The opening order (A, B) is determined by a coin toss in the waiting area before the start of the debate. (Heads A, tails B) Conducted by facilitating staff

2. Teams can provide the judges and their opponents small panels, simple diagrams or abstracts up to 1 A4 page in size to clearly establish their framing of the topic in the opening statement
※ However, such materials cannot be used to substitute verbal elaboration

3. The 5 minutes of strategizing time can be used up to two times in 2 or 3 minute-long segments

4. The use of strategizing time to obstruct the smooth flow of the debate will result in score penalization. The purpose of the strategizing time is to ensure that teams are given sufficient time to verify their information to present accurate supporting evidence, and organize their arguments.

5. Time not used during each team’s turn in the 9 minutes of opening statement and cross examination shall be forfeited.

6. When using the allocated free debate time (12 minutes per team), teams are allowed to speak freely, but must obtain the right to speak from the judges by raising their hands when seeking to speak during the opponent’s speech.

7. Only printed reference materials may be brought to the debate
※ Devices with internet access such as smartphones are not allowed in the room

8. Uneven distribution of speech time between teammates shall be penalized during the judges’ evaluation.

9. Participants shall check the allocated venue for their debate and arrive at the corresponding classroom 10 minutes before each debate. They must keep their issued name tags on throughout the course of the competition

10. All participants shall be present at the final even if they are not competing in the final.

11. 11. The winning team of each match in the semi-finals (four teams) shall enter the final. The 3rd (Excellence Prize) and 4th (Consolation Prize) places shall be determined by the sum of their scores.
