Professor Kyungmoo Yea at DGIST Selected for the
4th Biomedical Technology Development Project supported by Ministry of Science - Aims to develop a source technology to enhance transplant efficiency of stem cells for treating blood cancer
On Friday, November 15, DGIST announced that Professor Kyungmoo Yea in the Department of New Biology was selected for the ‘4th Biomedical Technology Development Project’ in the second half of 2019 by the Ministry of Science.
Prof. Yea will extract candidate materials for new drugs to increase transplant efficiency of blood stem cells and carry out technology transfer, with research on the ‘Development of Mobilization, Amplification, and Engraftment Strengthening Technology for Successful Transplant of Blood Stem Cells.’
The existing blood stem cell transplant method has low efficiency because it only focuses on a technology to enhance ‘mobilization’ of stem cells from bone marrows such as G-CSF (Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor) . An alternative treatment method is nonexistent despite the huge importance of the ‘proliferation’ and ‘engraftment’ efficiency of stem cells to increase the success rate of transplantation.
Prof. Yea said “Through this research, we plan to improve the mobilization, proliferation, and engraftment of agonist technology and increase transplant efficiency, thereby proposing new treatment methods for elder and terminal cancer patients.”
This research project is performed by Prof. Yea’s research team at DGIST as the principal researcher, in collaboration with Professor Jiyoung Jeong’s research team at Kosin University Medical School and Professor Sekwang Park’s research team at Inje University Medical School. The Ministry of Science and ICT will provide 1.7 billion KRW as research funding for 5 years.
