DGIST Holds the Innovation Proclamation Ceremony

- To become Innovative University Changing the World through Convergence -

- Presented Innovative education, Research excellence, and Economic value creation as 3 innovation strategies to lead the era of 4th industrial revolution -




DGIST is delighted to announce its 2034 Innovation Proclamation Ceremony for the declaration of new vision “Innovative University Changing the World through Convergence” at the university headquarter on Wednesday, May 2nd.


The ceremony was attended by about 500 related people in education, research, and industry from Korea and abroad, including: National Assembly Member Kyung Ho Choo, Mayor of Daegu Young Jin Kwon, Byeong Sam Kang, the Director of Future Human Resources Policy Bureau in the Ministry of Science and ICT, Education Councilor Elodie Franco-Ritz in the Embassy of France in Korea, Chairman Young Seok Ji of Elsevier Korea, Oh Ok Park, the Vice President of Education and Scholarship at KAIST, President Seung Hyun Moon of GIST, President Moo Young Jeong of UNIST, President Yong Hak Kim of Yonsei University, and President Sang Dong Kim of Kyungpook National University.


DGIST President Sang Hyuk Son stated “Science and technology-based innovative education and convergence research must be accompanied to lead the era of 4th industrial revolution where innovation and convergence are the keywords”. He also explained the purpose of innovation proclamation ceremony by saying that “We planned this event to announce the roles and determinations DGIST as a science and technology institute by proclaiming its new vision and innovation strategy all around the world, as well as to reestablish the roles and responsibilities of DGIST and its members on the vision and innovation strategy while arousing their empathy at the same time”.


To do so, DGIST started establishing its innovation development strategy in May last year and has formulated its innovation development strategy, which mainly consists of nurturing convergence human resources who will lead the era of 4th industrial revolution, conduct R&D to solve social issues, and commercialize innovative research while they are performing innovation development strategy consulting through a committee that consists of internal members and an expert consulting firm.


During the innovation proclamation ceremony, DGIST declared ‘Innovative University Changing the World through Convergence’ as its new vision, and proposed 3 innovations strategies to achieve this vision: ▲ Innovative education (innovate the educational paradigm to expand the future capabilities of science and technology): ▲ Research excellence (innovate the research system to lead science and technology development), and ▲ Economic value creation (create social values by creating an ecology for science and technology innovation).




DGIST also held global advisory committee meeting along with the innovation proclamation ceremony. The conference discussed DGIST’s future direction for education and plans to revitalize research and business, to become the world’s top institution based on its 3 business philosophies of nurturing excellent human resources, developing science and technology, and contributing to industry development. The global advisory conference was attended by Chairman Young Seok Ji of Elsevier Korea, President Umran Inan of KOC University in Turkey, President Nikolay Kudryavtsev Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), Executive Director Yoichiro Matsumoto in the Physics and Chemistry Research Institute in Japan, Chairman Oh Kyung Kwon in Korea’s National Academy Engineering, and President Yong Hak Kim of Yonsei University. They participants had a in-depth discussion on the roles and functions of universities in the new era in terms of education, research, and commercialization.


In addition, DGIST opened the Researcher Information Management System to support improving the research capabilities of faculty and researchers. DRIMS is expected to help set the virtuous cycle structure which consist of: setting a research goal, using research data, and spreading research performances, by reducing researchers’ administrative burdens based on systematic research performance management and identifying the institution’s research capabilities.


President Son said, “The 20 national strategies include the 4th industrial development led by science and technology development. With the advent of 4th industrial revolution, DGIST has been assigned tasks to foster innovative human resources, secure research smoothness, and contribute to national industries. DGIST has established 3 strategies of educational innovation, research innovation, and value creation to perform its missions, and will achieve the following goals by 2034, its 30th anniversary: ▲Raise 6,000 global leaders who contribute to the development of human society; ▲Run 10 CoE’s and produce 50 world-class scholars; and ▲ Found 200 research firms and 5 unicorns”.
