Hostile Work Environments

What is a hostile work environment?

This refers to acts that worsen a work environment or cause a worker mental or physical suffering due to the use an advantageous position such as one‘s status in the workplace, relationship, or other factor in a way that goes past an acceptable work level.

Article 2 – Prevention of and Responses to Hostile Work Environments

A ‘hostile work environment‘ is defined as follows.

  • 01.Acts of physical assault or those that threaten physical assault
  • 02.Repeated, continuous verbal abuse or violent language
  • 03.Insulting language in front of other employees or online, acts of spreading rumors about one‘s private affairs,
    ​or other speech that damages one‘s reputation​
  • 04.Repeatedly demanding that one‘s personal affairs be handled without a suitable reason
  • 05.Not acknowledging someone‘s work abilities or results without a fitting reason, or ridiculing someone
  • 06.Collectively excluding someone, or excluding/ignoring someone in a way that prevents them from obtaining information ​related to work or leaves them out of a decision-making process without a justifiable reason.​
  • 07.Instructing someone to carry out tasks that are unrelated to the work stipulated in their employment contract,
    or demanding that someone do odd jobs for a sufficient period of time without a justifiable reason.
  • 08.Not giving someone work for a considerable amount of time without a justifiable reason.
  • 09.Causing someone mental or physical suffering that exceeds a reasonable level or considerably worsening one’s work environment.​
